Bulldog Cross Country Does Well at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams had impressive performances at the Gardner-Webb Dual Meet Friday night. The Bulldog women's squad took home fourth place with 82 points. The men's squad came in fifth place with 119 points.

"We really had a good meet at Gardner-Webb," stated Asheville coach Dean Duncan. "It was a very tough course but I thought both our teams ran really well and competed against some tough competition."

The women's team was led by Emily Mase. She finished in third place with a time of 16:01 over the 4K course. Ingrid Allstaedt took 13th place at a time of 16:44. Freshman Katie Olert was 20th at 17:02. Liza Duncan finished in 22nd place with a time of 17:10. Erika Walker was 24th at 17:14. Freshman Ashleigh Spencer came in 30th at 17:25, while Sara Huckbody came in 37th at 18:10.

"I was really pleased with Emily and the rest of our team," added Duncan. "We had some good times tonight on this course. We had a good team effort."

On the men's side, senior Jonathan Harmon had a great meet for the Bulldogs. He took sixth place over the 6K course at a time of 19:39. Andrew Burnette ran solid as he finished in 22nd place with a time of 20:50. Adam Matthews was right behind Burnette with a 24th spot at 21:03. Freshman Keegan Peterson continued his good work in his rookie season with a 26th place finish at 21:24. Joel Quirk was 32nd at 21:58. Galen Goodrum was 33rd at 22:20. Duane Stepp took 34th at 22:44.

"The men did a good job, as well," said Duncan. "Jon Harmon is having a great senior season and he led us again on Friday. Andrew Burnette and Adam Matthews were both solid."

The Bulldogs are in action again this weekend at the Winthrop Invitational Saturday morning.
