CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville freshman Kyla Jones has been named the Big South New Balance Freshman of the Week for the third time this season. Radford's Kelli Darden was named the Choice Hotels Player of the Week by the conference office.
Jones, a guard from Adamsville, Ala., averaged 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as the Bulldogs split two games last week. She put in nine points and pulled down eight boards at Charleston Southern on Feb. 14. She followed that performance with 12 points, four assists and three rebounds as the Bulldogs downed Winthrop on Feb. 17. For the week, she was 6-of-13 (46 percent) from the floor to go along with five assists, two steals and one block. Jones was also named Freshman of the Week on January 15 and January 29. Jones joins Birmingham-Southern's Marish Henderson as the only players to receive the award three times this season.
Darden, a junior from Chesapeake, Va., notched 16.5 points and nine rebounds per game as her Highlanders went 2-0 on the week. She got her week started with 15 points against High Point with six boards and five blocks in the win against the Panthers. Four days later against Charleston Southern, Darden poured in 18 points on 88 percent shooting from the floor while connecting on 4-of-5 from the free throw line. The award marks the second-straight week she has been tabbed player of the week.
UNC Asheville travels to High Point on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game while Radford entertains Coastal Carolina tonight at 7 p.m.
