HIGH POINT, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team will look to advance to its third Big South Conference Tournament championship game in four years when the Bulldogs take on sixth-seeded Coastal Carolina in the semifinals of the tournament Friday night at the Millis Center starting at 7:30 p.m.
The match will be broadcast live on UNC Asheville's web-site, www.uncabulldogs.com starting at 7:20 p.m.
The Bulldogs (14-17) have won 12 of their last 17 matches after starting the season 2-12. Asheville advanced to the semifinals with a hard-fought 3-0 victory over Radford Tuesday night at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the match, 32-30, 30-28, 30-24. Asheville takes on a Coastal Carolina team that has also bounced back from a tough start. The Lady Chanticleers have won four of their last five matches to improve their record to 10-22. One of those wins came two weeks ago over the Bulldogs as Coastal Carolina downed Asheville in four games. UNC Asheville had defeated CCU earlier in the season at Justice Center in four games. The Lady Chants upset third-seeded Liberty in four games in the quarterfinals Tuesday night.
"We have a lot of respect for Coastal Carolina, and I'm not surprised they've turned things around," stated Asheville coach Julie Torbett. "We had a tough match with them at our place and they beat us pretty good at their place. They've had some impressive wins in the past few weeks, including a great win over College of Charleston and beating Liberty at Liberty was impressive."
Torbett is quite proud of her young team for getting this far.
"Despite the tough start, we've accomplished two of our goals," stated Torbett. "One was to finish in second place and the other was get to the semifinals of the tournament. I'm very proud of this team for battling through some tough times but still able to earn some big wins and get to the semifinals of the conference tournament."
Torbett's program has been to the semifinals of the league tournament seven times in the past nine years. The Bulldogs have gotten to the finals two of the last three years before falling to BSC kingpin Winthrop both times. The Eagles are the heavy favorite to win this year's crown at 31-2.
