CLEMSON, S.C. - Dane Richards scored one goal and assisted on another in leading #3 Clemson to a 3-1 win over UNC Asheville in an intercollegiate soccer match at Clemson Wednesday night.
With the win, Clemson is now 11-3-1 overall, while UNC Asheville falls to 4-10 this season.
The Bulldogs battled the powerful Tigers on even terms for most of the match and only trailed 2-1 late before Richards sealed the victory. Asheville played most of the match without starters Nick Baud and Chris Burn.
"Our lads performed quite well against a great Clemson team," stated Asheville coach Steve Cornish. "We weren't 100 percent healthy and yet we were in the game for the entire match. You always want to get a result but tonight I was very pleased with our effort and execution. We need to build on this for Saturday against VMI and the rest of the season."
Clemson took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute as Frederico Moojen scored his ninth goal of the year with assists by Tate Parrish and Bryson Moore.
The Tigers took a 2-0 advantage early in the second half (48:09) as Mark Buchholz scored from eight yards out off a corner kick by Richards.
UNC Asheville's Edwin Wotortsi, who made his return to Clemson where he played last season, scored at the 73:06 mark on a penalty kick. Barrett Locke was fouled in the box to set up the PK.
Richards scored his 10th goal of the season with 7:01 left in the match with an assist by Michael Brooks to make it 3-1.
The Bulldogs return home for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 21, to face VMI at 1 p.m. The match can be heard live on www.uncabulldogs.com.
