ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Barrett Locke and Sho Yamagishi each netted goals and Michael Pererira made a save on the last kick of the match to preserve UNC Asheville's 2-1 exhibition victory over Montreat College on Wednesday.
Locke put the Bulldogs on the board first in the 26th minute. John Hillman received a ball sent into the box and chested it down to an on-running Locke who put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the second 30 minute session, Ian Willmot made a run through the Montreat defense and found Yamagishi who one-timed a right-footed shot to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the 41st minute.
Montreat took two shots in the first 10 minutes of the match. The second off a corner kick was saved by Judd Lawrence who played the first hour of the match. The Cavilers did not take another shot until the 75th minute of play but then made a late charge.
In the 89th minute the Cavs cut the lead to 2-1 and then had a shot to tie the match in the closing seconds that was saved by Pereira who played the final 30 minute session.
Asheville outshot Montreat 11-5 in the match including an 11-1 advantage during 78 minute stretch. The Montreat goalkeeper who played the full 90 minutes was forced to make three saves. The Cavilers took five corner kicks to just one for the Bulldogs.
Asheville will open up the regular season on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. when it hosts Charlotte at Greenwood Field. Admission is free and the match can be heard live on uncabulldogs.com.
