ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team began practice for 2006 season Wednesday night at Justice Center. The Bulldogs are coming off a 25-7 season and advanced to the finals of the Big South Conference Tournament for the second time in three years.

UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett returns only four players from last year's squad but one of those is senior outside hitter Elif Unlu, who was an Honorable Mention All-American in 2005. Nine new players are on the Asheville roster.

"Practice has started very well. Everyone came back in great shape, ready to work hard," stated Torbett. "We have a lot of new faces but there's a lot of talent with these new players. I'm impressed with everyone's work ethic."

The Bulldogs will practice for the next three weeks before opening the season at the James Madison Invitational on Aug. 25-26. Torbett's club will face Canisius and Rutgers on Aug. 25 before playing James Madison and Duquesne the next day. UNC Asheville opens its home schedule the next weekend when the Bulldogs take part in the UNC Asheville Invitational. The Bulldogs play Cleveland State on Friday, Sept. 1 starting at 7:30 p.m. and then take on UNC Greensboro (Noon) and East Tennessee State (5 p.m.) the next day.
