Harris and Bell Win Big South Track Championships - UNC Asheville Bulldogs Official Athletics Site

CONWAY, S.C. - UNC Asheville had a pair of conference champions as Latanya Harris won the 400 meters and David Bell won the steeplechase to qualify for NCAA regionals on Sunday in the final day of the Big South Conference Championships.

Harris won the 400 meter race with a meet record time of 54.95, finishing ahead of Coastal Carolina's Ebony Brown who ran a 55.23. Harris finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.7.

David Bell won the steeplechase with a time 9:14.81 finishing ahead of Liberty's Drew Ponder. This marks the first time UNC Asheville has had two Big South Conference champions since the 2003 Big South Conference Meet.

The Bulldogs finished seventh in the women's competition as Coastal Carolina won both the men's and women's competitions. Asheville finished eighth on the men's side.

Also scoring points for Asheville were Troy Young who finsihed fifth in the javelin, Omar Ahmad who finished sixth in the triple jump, K.C. Radford who finished seventh in the pole vault, the women's 4X400 meter team that finished fourth. John Harmon finished fifth in the 10,000 meters, Emily Mase and Ingrid Allstaedt finished seventh and eighth in the 1,500 meter run. Mase, Allstaedt, and Elizabeth Duncan finished sixth, seventh, and eighth in the 800 meter race for the Bulldogs.

Bell and Harris also made the All-Academic team for each of their indivual sports. For Bell, it completed a sweep of All-Academic team honors this year. He made the Big South All-Academic team for Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field and Outdoor Track and Field.

Harris earned her fourth academic honor. She made the Big South All-Academic team for Indoor Track and Field and Outdoor Track and Field last year and this year.
