ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Both the UNC Asheville men's and women's soccer teams were honored for their strong work in the classroom by earning the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 academic year.

A total of 773 college teams (289 men, 484 women) earned the Team Academic Award, including 191 schools who had both their men's and women's programs among the recipients.

The UNC Asheville women's soccer team finished out last year with a 3.47 grade-point average as a team, while the Bulldog men's soccer team boasted a 3.06 grade-point average as a team.

"It's awesome to win this award again," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "It's become part of our culture and part of the standard of our program in that we are going to be above a 3.0 as a team. I think it speaks to three things: (1) it's due to the types of student-athletes that we recruit here to UNC Asheville, (2) to the level of support the athletics department gives to our student-athletes and (3) the majority of this – 98 percent or higher – is due to the student-athletes and their willingness on and off the field.

"Anytime where you can take a big group like ours of over 25-30 guys and have a team cumulative GPA above a 3.0 that speaks a lot to the commitment of these young men to their academics and recognizing that UNC Asheville's amazing academic reputation is not just because we are a beautiful school in the mountains, but that it's a hard place to go to school and they've got to put the work in each and every day from the first day of the fall semester to the last day of the spring. I couldn't be prouder to be their coach because they truly are the embodiment and definition of all we hold dear here at UNC Asheville."

First-year women's soccer head coach Lindsay Vera knows she has a special group of student-athletes as well.

"Since day one I've recognized that these players are capable of  handling any challenge at this level," Vera said. "It's no surprise to me, or to anyone in this department, that they earned yet another United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 academic year on behalf of UNC Asheville. I'm so proud of their effort in the classroom and the way they continue representing this Bulldogs' program."

United Soccer Coaches annually celebrates the academic achievements of high school and college soccer teams whose student-athletes collectively demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their studies over the course of a full academic year.

College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster.
