2015-16 NSCAA Team Academic Award Winners
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Both the UNC Asheville men's and women's soccer programs are competing at an elite level.
And that's not just on the pitch.
In fact, earlier this year the Asheville men's and women's soccer teams were recognized for their outstanding work in the classroom by the NSCAA. Each team was honored as a 2015-2016 College Team Academic Award Winner.
"What an honor to be one of less than 80 NCAA Division I programs to have both our men's and women's soccer teams recognized by the NSCAA as College Team Academic Award Winners," Janet R. Cone, Director of Athletics, said. "Our student-athletes and coaches are dedicated and committed to maintaining better than a 3.0 GPA and competing at the highest level of sports. I am proud of our Bulldog soccer champions and leaders."
To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players.
The Asheville men's soccer team under the direction Mathes Mennell posted a 3.16 GPA over the course of the span, while the women's soccer team under the guidance of Michelle Demko posted a 3.38 GPA.
Mennell was extremely proud of the commitment of his team to be one of the teams included in this exclusive list.
"I am thrilled that the hard work that our student-athlete's are putting in the classroom is being recognized by the NSCAA," Mennell said. "The endeavor of being a Division I athlete is a very difficult one and to marry this with superb academic success is a testament to UNC Asheville's commitment to developing well rounded young people. Excellence in academics is a hallmark of everything we hold dear here at UNC Asheville and I could not be prouder of the work our men's soccer team is putting forth."
Demko knows to play at a high level and also excel in the classroom is very special.
"I am proud that our student-athlete academic success is recognized by the NSCAA," Demko said. "The demands of being a college athlete are tough and one that requires great commitment and discipline. The academic rigor at UNC Asheville is among the best in the country for public liberal arts institutions. For our players to succeed in this academic environment is a testament to their investment in helping create a successful future at the end of their athletic career."
