ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville picked up its 23rd win of the season by defeating Big South Conference rival Birmingham-Southern, 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the match 30-26, 30-25, 30-26.

The victory was UNCA's fifth straight. Asheville improved its record to 23-6 overall and finished league play at 10-4. The Panthers fell to 13-14 overall and finished 6-8 in the BSC.

The Bulldogs were led by senior Talia Ogle who had 13 kills, 13 digs and six service aces. Elif Unlu contributed 12 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Asheville did a solid job blocking in the match and recorded 12 blocks. Sophomore Ashley Wrightenberry had seven blocks for the Bulldogs. Setter Amanda Wiles finished with 40 assists, seven digs and five kills. Krysti Haves had 13 digs for Asheville.

BSC was led by Lillian Henderson with a game-high 14 kills and three blocks. Jana Smelley added 13 kills. Alex Plummer sparked the Panthers' defense with a game-high 23 digs.

The Bulldogs took advantage of six BSC serving errors to win the first game, 30-26. In the second game, the Panthers built a 16-10 lead only to see Asheville roar back behind the play of Ogle and Unlu. An Unlu kill put the Bulldogs in front, 25-24 and UNCA won, 30-25 on an Ogle service ace.

In the third game, the Bulldogs led from start to finish. Asheville jumped out to a 6-1 lead and then led 25-20 before the Panthers hustled back to get to 26-25. However, Ogle had two straight kills to push the lead to 28-25. A kill from senior Rose Butler finished the match.

"We played well today and I was glad to see that on Senior Day," commented Asheville coach Julie Torbett. "Talia Ogle had a sensational match. She led us in three different categories and just played great. This was a good victory against a very good Birmingham-Southern team."

Both teams will be at home Tuesday night to open play in the Big South Conference Volleyball Tournament. UNC Asheville will be the third seed and host sixth-seeded Liberty at 7 p.m., while the Panthers will be the fourth seed and host fifth-seeded High Point at 7 p.m. CST.
