ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The UNC Asheville men's tennis team earned its first win of the season with a 5-2 road victory over defending MEAC champion South Carolina State Saturday afternoon at the Freddy Lawrence Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs (1-1) captured five singles points to pick up the win over S.C. State. UNCA lost the doubles' point but rallied in singles.

On the women's side, S.C. State defeated UNC Asheville, 7-0 in the Bulldogs first match of the season.

"I'm delighted with the victory today for our men's team," stated UNC Asheville coach Chase Hodges. "South Carolina State is a team that went to the NCAA Tournament last year and has most of its team back. I like the way we battled this afternoon and pulled out some tough matches against a talented team. This is a great win for our program.

"Our women's team lost to a very good South Carolina State club," commented Hodges. "We're a young team that's only going to get better as the year goes on."

In the men's match, the Bulldogs won four singles' points in three sets. Paul Ambrose, Rob Nunnery and Adam Branks lost the first set before rallying to earn the victory.

The Bulldogs will have their home opener this Wednesday afternoon at the UNC Asheville Tennis Center when UNCA entertain Mars Hill starting at 2:30 p.m.
