ATHENS, Ga. – In the oldest fall college tennis tournament in the nation it was UNC Asheville junior Henry Patten that was declared champion.
Patten was actually declared co-champion in the event along with Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss. The two were supposed to play today in the final, but due to the forecasted weather in the area from Hurricane Irma it was decided to declare co-champions.
"This is obviously a tremendous win for Henry and our program," UNC Asheville men's tennis head coach Tom Hand said. "This performance will get some national attention, and I think it's indicative of the level of tennis that he is playing these days."
In being declared co-champion at the prestigious event, Patten bested the second, fifth, 14th and 15th seeds at the Southern Intercollegiate.
The reigning Big South Player of the Year advanced to the finals of the Southern Intercollegiate Division I draw against Sandkaulen by downing second-seeded Emil Reinberg of Georgia 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Reinberg finished the 2016-17 season for Georgia as the 51st-ranked player in the country in the final ITA Division I rankings of the season.
Patten closed out his impressive 2017 season with a top-15 regional ranking in the Carolina Region Rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Patten was ranked 14th in the final Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings – Carolina of the 2017 season.
Unranked in the region entering the 2017 season, Patten was tabbed 118th nationally in the Oracle/ITA Division I Collegiate Rankings that were released on April 18, 2017.
The national ranking in April came after a stellar regular season for Patten that saw the then sophomore from Manningtree, Essex, U.K. go undefeated at the No. 1 singles position.
Patten's 19-0 record at the conclusion of the regular season allowed him to become the first in program history to achieve an undefeated regular season at No. 1 singles. He won every match but one in singles in straight sets during the regular season.
The 2017 Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Year, Patten would overall close out his 2017 campaign at 20-1 at No. 1 singles.
In his first two seasons with the Bulldogs, Patten is now 34-4 overall in singles.
A two-time All-Big South selection in both singles and doubles, Patten and then senior Josh Swindler finished the 2017 season at 20-1 at No. 1 doubles. The duo concluded their final doubles campaign together having won 16 straight to close out the season.
Patten and Swindler in their two years together as a duo were 34-4.
